Melissa Solomon suggests the golden rule as the best advice for new managers: "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Consider how you would feel if
Someone promised you something and didn't deliver.
You were given a reward for something you didn't do, or were not noticed for something you did to support and enhance the association.
You had to sit by while important tasks were left undone
Nobody took time to talk to you and ask how things were going
No one had any interest in your goals or interests
You were not offered any opportunity to expand your skills
You couldn't tell if the work you just did was good or not.
Nobody told you how much your contributions were valued
Your leaders didn't seem serious about what they were doing.
Now, if you were the leader, what could you do to see that those working on your team were not faced with these situations? If you promise something, make sure you deliver. Turn each individual on your team loose on challenging activities and let them know how they are doing as they get things done. Take the time to learn why your team members belong on your team, where their interests are, and what they really want to do. Provide rewards and recognition appropriate to successes and contributions. Accept the responsibilities of your own role on the team but don't be pretentious, overbearing, hard of hearing or too busy for any individual. Just be you - and have your focus on helping your team members get the job done.
